The Green Room

According to a professor of theatre history, long before modern makeup was invented the actors had to apply makeup before a show and allow it to set up or cure before performing. Until the makeup was cured, it was "green" and people were advised to sit quietly in the "green room" until such time as the makeup was stable enough for performing. Uncured makeup is gone, but the green room lives on.

Is grafitti art?

Tagging is no more interesting than dogs peeing on hydrants - and pretty much the same thing. You should be able to do something more than write your "name" in spraypaint. Who cares? Rival gangs? Your buddies who have a competition to see who can tag the most first? Boring.

Watching for Desert Wildlife

Concentrate on those areas where you are most likely to encounter wildlife. Some desert species still need to drink so the gardens, orchards and natural springs in the mountains can be especially worthwhile. The hiking trails will take you to many of these areas.

Faded Blue Denim

Faded blue denim is the mythical fabric of America, and in Europe young people are crazy about it as just that emblem, representing the Wild West, Greenwich Village, Marlon Brando, Woody Guthrie, and Grant Wood all rolled into one. You can be a computer programmer in Copenhagen, but when you pull on blue jeans, you hear a horse whinny and feel a guitar on your back: the Danish word for jeans is cowboy-bukser, cowboy pants. A man in a suit is a man in a suit, but someone in blue jeans is part of an American myth, and that is a great gift to the world.

By the River

I got out at one promising site near the base of a hill. From a distance it looked flat and the woods were open and not thick with brush. I got out with some difficulty on the muddy banks and looked around. The ground was damp mud. Not sink-to-your-ankles mud but soft ground. Normally an absolutely no-go for camping. But considering the time, I decided to look closer. That's when I discovered hundreds of alligator foot prints. Then near the bank I saw an alligator slide where they must slither into the water. I could make out the entire print of an alligator's body. Even though I didn't actually see any alligators there, it was still spooky. We moved on.
