Container Gardens

When one thinks of a garden, the first image to come to mind is likely to include manicured lawns and spacious flower beds. Yet in the world of the twenty-first century, where many living spaces lack the space to create such a natural panorama, the popularity of smaller, mobile, and more creative expressions of the love of nature is on the increase. Container gardens are, for many, the preferred approach to bringing to life plants of all descriptions.

Faded Blue Denim

Faded blue denim is the mythical fabric of America, and in Europe young people are crazy about it as just that emblem, representing the Wild West, Greenwich Village, Marlon Brando, Woody Guthrie, and Grant Wood all rolled into one. You can be a computer programmer in Copenhagen, but when you pull on blue jeans, you hear a horse whinny and feel a guitar on your back: the Danish word for jeans is cowboy-bukser, cowboy pants. A man in a suit is a man in a suit, but someone in blue jeans is part of an American myth, and that is a great gift to the world.

Another stinkin' sofa

I woke up stretched out on the red velvet sofa, my white woven blanket with my initials on me. On top of the bridge. It had stopped raining. I got up, folded the blanket neatly and pushed Mama's red velvet sofa home. I remember hoping she wouldn't miss it.

By the River

I got out at one promising site near the base of a hill. From a distance it looked flat and the woods were open and not thick with brush. I got out with some difficulty on the muddy banks and looked around. The ground was damp mud. Not sink-to-your-ankles mud but soft ground. Normally an absolutely no-go for camping. But considering the time, I decided to look closer. That's when I discovered hundreds of alligator foot prints. Then near the bank I saw an alligator slide where they must slither into the water. I could make out the entire print of an alligator's body. Even though I didn't actually see any alligators there, it was still spooky. We moved on.

Alternative uses for barn wood

Gus's place, a small cabin made from red rocks and used barn wood, was a retired cowboys palace. It clung to the side of one bluff overlooking another with a small pasture in-between. In the morning when Sedona was half awake and half asleep, the facing bluff often appeared like an apparition.

office chair

I am currently sitting in a luxurious office chair which came from a dumpster, is worth several hundred dollars, and the only thing which was wrong with it was a missing wheel. This arrived at my door one evening from a dumpster-diving friend who was in the neighborhood and knew I was looking for a place to sit. The new wheel cost less than six dollars to replace. (Thanks, man! You rule! Now I can finally sit here in comfort while I contemplate the Internet.)

On the clothesline

I miss standing there with my basket of clean laundry, my bag of clothespins in the little bag that would hang on the line so you could push it to the next section with ease, and just "time" to dream or think about the days' activities. The smell of clean bed sheets and towels was perfume to me. The warm sunshine on my face and arms kept me looking healthy, the bending and stretching kept me trim, and the time to myself kept me sane!

Rocks

At Hot Rox Creations, each rockscape is carefully conceptualized and constructed, to appear as if its beauty had occurred spontaneously, from nature. "One should see the art in the work, and not the work of the artist."
